What to Wear for Family Photos in the Pacific Northwest

A photographer's guide to wardrobe for PNW family photo sessions — palettes that work in the rain, layers that photograph well, and what to skip.

What to Wear for Family Photos in the Pacific Northwest

Family photo outfits don't need to match — they need to coordinate. Here's the formula we send every family before a Pacific Northwest session.

Pick a palette, not an outfit

Choose 3–5 colors that look good together in nature: rust + cream + olive, or navy + camel + sage, or burgundy + forest + oat. Every person picks any outfit from inside that palette. Done.

Layer for PNW weather

  • Cardigans, denim jackets, and chunky knits photograph beautifully and add depth
  • Avoid bright white — it blows out in overcast PNW light
  • Skip large logos and graphic prints — they date the photos fast
  • Closed-toe shoes for forest and beach sessions (trust us)

Texture beats pattern

Linen, knits, suede, and corduroy all photograph richer than a flat solid color. If you want pattern, limit it to one person and keep the others in solids from the same palette.

Bring options for the kids

Pack one backup outfit per kid in the car. Mud happens. Snacks happen. Backup outfits save sessions.

"The families that look most natural on camera are the ones who stopped trying to coordinate and just picked a palette."
