South Sound elopement & micro-wedding guide
Updated November 1, 2026
Waterfront parks, forests, and mountain views are all within an hour or two of Tacoma, which makes the South Sound a great place to elope or host a micro-wedding.
Legal basics in Washington
You need a marriage license from any Washington county auditor, a licensed officiant, and two witnesses age 18+. There's a three-day waiting period and the license is valid for 60 days.
Permits
City, county, state, and national parks each have their own rules. Mount Rainier National Park, for example, requires a special use permit for ceremonies. Always check the managing agency's current requirements before choosing a spot.
